Hugo Larsen: A West Indian Police Officer, marked St. Thomas, 1905. Oil on canvas, 46 x 40 cm. Private collection.
Extremely few of the persons on Hugo Larsen's West Indian portraits of people of colour have been identified. But with this handsome police officer there seems to be a fair chance. From the painting we know where and when his has done service and we even know his number. It ought to be a simple matter of looking him up in the relevant records of the service of police personnel. Most of the historic records of Danish West Indies are archived in the National Archive in Copenhagen. Problem is that this particular record is stored in the National Archives in Washington D.C. If you have access to the National Archives in Washington or know someone who has, I will be most interested in your help. I have a very precise reference to the relevant record.
