Hugo Larsen: Christian Helweg-Larsen (1860-1934)

Hugo Larsen: Christian Helweg-Larsen (1860-1934), 1931. Oil on canvas, 76.5 x 63.5 cm. Private collection.

Christian Helweg-Larsen was governor of Danish West Indies from 1912 until 1916. He was the last appointed governor of DWI, but due to some problems ahead of the sale to U.S.A. he resigned in the fall of 1916, for which reason the captain of the Danish warship Valkyrien Henri Konow was temporarily appointed in his place for the last months of the Danish regime. When Hugo Larsen arrived to St. Thomas in 1904, Helweg-Larsen was secretary to the governor and he introduced Hugo Larsen to numerous Danish families in the colony. After their return to Denmark, Helweg-Larsen and the artist remained in contact and besides this portrait, a couple of drawings of the governor's cook Sylvanie are known.
