Hugo Larsen

Inquiries

Hugo Larsen was a brilliant impressionist and realist - but virtually unknown. Hence my decision to start a virtual gallery for him. In the gallery you will find a number of his paintings and drawings made in Denmark and the Danish West Indies (the present US Virgin Islands). Most of these works are owned by Danes and a few by Danish museums.

But a number of his paintings must be owned by people outside Denmark. In 1913-14, Hugo Larsen made a longer trip to England, originally invited by a managing director John Cridland who then headed the construction of the municipal gas-works in Copenhagen. Cridland ordered a portrait of his son-in-law James Tobin Bush, an officer in the Royal Navy, later appointed to rear admiral. John Cridland lived in Exeter and James Tobin Bush in Bromley, Kent. Hugo Larsen stayed in England some 6 months, including a trip to Ireland. It is my hope that a number of paintings from this trip still exist. If you know of any of his works I would be very pleased to hear from you.

Furthermore, it is known that Hugo Larsen - during his stay in the Danish West Indies 1904-1907 - visited USA (New Orleans), Mexico, Cuba (Santiago) and St. Martin. I have yet to see any pictures from these visits. Please let me know, if you have any knowledge about these visits and the paintings he made there, not to mention paintings that he may have sold in these countries.

In 1921 Hugo Larsen visited Italy. A few paintings from this trip are known: Two from Varazze and one from San Remo, all in northern Italy. There is no evidence that he has been in Rome.

In a Danish encyclopedia of artists it is mentioned that Hugo Larsen also travelled in Holland, France and Switzerland. I have no evidence of the visits to these countries, but would surely be pleased to know.

Below are a few thumbnail reproductions of specific paintings that I inquire about. You can see larger reproductions and more information by clicking on one of the thumbnails. But I stress that I am interested in any information about all Hugo Larsen's works.
