Hugo Larsen's paintings and drawings from the Danish West Indies (now U.S. Virgin Islands) are rare visitors to the auctions. In the past ten years we have only seen two.

Here is a nice and characteristic coastal view from St. Croix. Bright, colour saturated and with Larsen's characteristic and impressionistic way of rendering the tropical climate.

I am no expert of St. Croix' geography. If you happen to recognize the motive, I would be happy to receive a hint. Are we looking at Judith's Fancy?

An early study of a naked female model. A remarkable thing is the signature which we have not seen before. But there are sufficient characteristics from his handwriting to accept this as yet another version.

The painting was most recently being auctioned at Bruun Rasmussen in Copenhagen in May 2008. The hammer price was 2,500 DKK and reasonable for the painting. This time it is being auctioned at eBay.com with a minimum price of 890 EUR. My best guess is that it will not be sold.

A nice little portrait. Characteristic for the period before Hugo Larsen went to Danish West Indies and developed into an impressionist. Warm, colour saturated, yet talented. And please notice the unusual signature, clearly from an experimental period.

Holstebro Auktioner (The Auction House in Holstebro) has this sketch at auction 15 Apr 2008 together with the seascape above.

Although a first look at the motive gives the impression of a sunset by the sea, it is not. Take a closer look at the surface below the horizon. This is the moor of Jutland and I am pretty sure this is one of the many sketches Hugo Larsen made in 1900 for his large painting of the prisoners on the moor. It is probably not a sunset either, as the landscape profile to the west is not equal to the one on the moor, so it is most likely a sunrise you are watching.

Hugo Larsen: Tove Vibeke Marchen Olsen, 1931

A small, simple, yet insisting portrait for sale. The portrait is said to depict miss Tove Vibeke Marchen Olsen, later married by the name Jensen, citizen of Copenhagen. The portrait is painted in oil on canvas. Size is 34 x 46.5 cm., with frame 48.5 x 61 cm.

This painting from Merløsegaard - a large farm in the centre of Zealand in Denmark - is currently for sale from a private collection.

This is an oil on hardboard, 34 x 43 cm., signed in 1929. The painting is behind glass and the frame is an original Georg Kleis.

This early drawing of a bearded man is marked "96, Skelskør". It is currently for sale from a private collection.

This is a pencil drawing on paper, 20,5 x 18,5 cm., signed in 1896.
