Fishermen in Copenhagen Harbour, 1925

A typical Copenhagen motive by Howe. Across Copenhagen Harbour, we see the workshops at Burmeister & Wain diesel engine factory and the tower of Christian's Church in the city part called Christianshavn. In the foreground, fishermen from Gilleleje on the Northern coast of Sealand are preparing to sell the catch of the day. Apart from the few glimpses one can have of the church tower between today's office buildings, all of this motive has now disappeared.

Cattle in the Field, 1930

Although Howe lived in Copenhagen, he was regularly in the Danish countryside to paint. One might guess that he brought back his idyllic landscapes to the people in Copenhagen who had left the countryside only a generation or two earlier.

Fall in the Deer Park
